ABSECON, NEW JERSEY --- Atlantic County government honored 10 county residents with disabilities for contributions to their communities. The 14th Annual Donald J. Sykes Award Ceremony was held Friday, Oct. 25 at the Absecon United Methodist Church [in Atlantic County].

Donald J. Sykes Award ReceptionMike Sciullio, chairman of the Disabled Citizens Advisory Board and a past recipient of the Sykes Award, said the purpose of the award is to "recognize outstanding individuals with disabilities."

Family, friends and agencies nominated the honorees for the award. The recipients have overcome challenges to serve their community through local organizations or to succeed in work and study.

Kathy Quish, Director of Atlantic County's Office of Disability Services, read excerpts of the nominating letters, in which the award winners were described as compassionate, determined, dedicated, successful, courageous, tireless, involved and inspirational.

Congressman Frank LoBiondo sent a letter congratulating the recipients for their "tremendous achievements" that "show through hard work and dedication, that anything is possible."

The keynote speaker was Paul Stuart Wichansky, a public educator from A Vision in Motion, a motivational speakers bureau hosting a collection of motivational speakers who have overcome tremendous adversity. Wichansky did not talk about his struggles with cerebral palsy, but the way he has chosen to live his life with it.

"Your challenges are not supposed to defeat you," he said. "But they're supposed to help you discover who you are."

Wichansky remarked on the "power of positivity" and spirit the award winners convey to others."

"They're not just human beings, they are inspiration personified," said Wichansky.
